Visiting Crunchyroll Expo – A Glimpse of Otaku Culture’s Future in the Bay Area

After disappearing from the fan convention scene for a year, I decided to make my return to anime conventions by going all the way across the country for the debut con from North America’s premier anime streaming service. Crunchyroll Expo was touted as a convention that would spice things up, compared to most anime conventions. Although it felt like a regular anime convention and I didn’t notice any subtleties that made the con stand out, CR Expo got me back into the game in good fashion. The [Read Entire Story]

Hybrids Are Scary Education for All

If there’s one entertainment genre I usually stay away from, it’s horror. I get scared easily. I am fearful of things that haunt me at night. I don’t like haunted mansions. I don’t like zombies. I get freaked out over ominous serial killers. But over the past few years, I’ve gotten to enjoy a series like Tokyo Ghoul that should bother me, but has me more interested in the mindset of monsters.I’ve been following the events of Tokyo Ghoul:re and it’s been one strange and fascinating ride into the [Read Entire Story]

A New Venture – Comrades Against Suicide

I started a new project that I’ve thought about starting since the summer on Tumblr, which I hope can bring anime fans with mental disabilities closer together. It’s called “Comrades Against Suicide.”I feel that this is the time to do something given how mental health is still undervalued in a world that needs to value it and youth should be told that they mean something in someone’s life.If you have any stories you want to share, you can use this form. If you have any questions about the form, [Read Entire Story]

Boys and Girls, Be Lustrous

After reading Land of the Lustrous and learning more about its universe, much to my surprise is seeing the series feature on the cover of one of Japan’s top anime magazines, PASH! (on the right side next to Animage), for female readers. While the anime adaptation has the gem characters portrayed with female seiyu talent, the characters refer to each other sometimes as “brothers” or use the Japanese masculine version of “I” to refer to themselves. The Kodansha Comics translation has them refer to [Read Entire Story]

No, Don’t Read, Don’t Watch. Wait, You Should.

Here’s a scenario you’ve been through before (maybe many times) - you’re tired from work/school and want to indulge yourself. You decide to binge a season’s worth of anime or a set number of manga volumes in a single setting. You might think “Yeah, I deserve this.” Then the time goes by and you begin to criticize yourself for wasting time on interests that don’t necessarily help you “grow.” Pleasure then becomes pain. I ponder about how this affects hardcore fans of anime and manga. This all [Read Entire Story]

The episodes are based on a parody manga of the same name. There are a total of 25 episodes for the anime. My Impressions of Anime I’ve Recently Watched: Nyoron! Churuya-san

Nyoron! Churuya-san is an original net anime that features a super-deformed version of Tsuruya, one of the characters from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. There were a total of 13 episodes of this anime produced, and they streamed on YouTube in February 2009. To me, this ONA is even worse than The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya. The animation used for this series was very off-putting, and quite frankly, looked incredibly bad. I also hated the voice used for Mikuru Asahina, because it was [Read Entire Story]
